TrueUp - Expense Splitting App
Last updated: February 9, 2026
Introduction
TrueUp ("we," "our," or "the app") is an iOS expense-splitting application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use TrueUp.
Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address — used for authentication and to identify you within groups
- Display name — shown to other group members
- Profile information — optional details you provide in your profile
You may sign in with your email/password or via Google Sign-In. If you use Google Sign-In, we receive your name and email address from Google. We do not receive or store your Google password.
Expense and Group Data
When you use the app, we store:
- Groups you create or are invited to, including group names and member lists
- Expenses you add, including descriptions, amounts, dates, and how they are split among members
- Settlements (records of payments between members)
- Activity logs of actions taken within groups (e.g., adding an expense, settling a debt)
Payment Handles
You may optionally provide payment handles for Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle to make it easier for others to pay you. These are stored in your profile and shared with members of your groups.
Subscription Information
Subscription purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect or store your payment card details. We only receive confirmation of your subscription status from Apple.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Authenticate your identity and manage your account
- Enable expense splitting and debt tracking within groups
- Display balances and suggest settlements
- Facilitate payments by sharing your payment handles with group members
- Send transactional communications (e.g., group invitations)
- Manage your subscription status
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore and Firebase Authentication), hosted on Google Cloud infrastructure. Data is protected by:
- Firebase Authentication for access control
- Firestore Security Rules that restrict data access to authorized group members
- Encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest
- Firestore offline persistence on your device for offline access
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Your data is shared only in the following circumstances:
- With group members — your name, email, expenses, and payment handles are visible to members of groups you belong to
- With service providers — we use Google Firebase for authentication and data storage, and Apple for subscription processing
- As required by law — we may disclose information if required by legal process
Third-Party Services
TrueUp integrates with the following third-party services:
| Service | Purpose | Privacy Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Firebase Authentication | Account sign-in | Google Privacy Policy |
| Cloud Firestore | Data storage | Google Privacy Policy |
| Google Sign-In | Optional sign-in method | Google Privacy Policy |
| Apple App Store | Subscription processing | Apple Privacy Policy |
When you use deep links to pay via Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle, you are redirected to those apps. We do not send any data to those services — the payment information is constructed locally on your device.
Data Retention
- Your account data is retained as long as your account is active.
- Expense and settlement records are retained for the lifetime of the group they belong to.
- If you delete your account, your personal profile data will be removed. Group records (expenses, settlements, activity) may be retained in anonymized form for the integrity of other members' records.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data through the app
- Update your profile information and payment handles at any time
- Delete your account by contacting us
- Export your data by contacting us
Children's Privacy
TrueUp is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or by other means. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
